IPPSR Statement on Redistricting Commission Adopted Map

EAST LANSING, Mich., February 29, 2024 – The following statement is from Matt Grossmann, Director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University, regarding the decision by the Michigan Independent Citizans Redistiticting Commission to move forward with a new legislative map proposal. This action was necessitated by a Federal Court order striking down the previous State Legislative maps.

"IPPSR researchers and staff members are pleased that the Commission responded to the Court order by listening to the citizens of Detroit and quickly moving forward with a new map. I'm happy to say that we think it addresses the court's concerns, improves on the previous map, and will improve representation in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. IPPSR pledges its continuing support for this process and hopes to continue as a resource for the commission."

IPPSR has been highly involved in the redistricting process, providing the Commission as well as the public with a comprehensive analysis of the proposed maps, including a breakdown of a draft of the adopted "Motown Sound" map, which can be found here.
