Daniel
Rosenthal
Legislative Intern Award
The
Michigan State University Institute for Public Policy and
Social Research and James
Madison College are pleased to administer the annual Daniel
Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award on behalf of MSU.
The award annually honors the young men and women nominated for service as interns.
Daniel Rosenthal was one of MSU's first Legislative Student Intern
Program participants in January 1977. After his unfortunate passing
in June of that year, the Rosenthal family established this award
to pay tribute to the dignity of Dan's life and acknowledge the
value that he placed on his experience as a legislative intern.
To recognize Rosenthal's enthusiasm, intelligence, sincerity and dedication,
stipends are awarded to a winner and a runner-up chosen from the
group of nominees. The runner-up receives the Vernon Ehlers Award, named for U.S. Rep. Vernon Ehlers who established the honor.
Both awards carry a cash stipend. A committee composed of representatives from
the Michigan House and Senate, as well as from MSU, makes these selections.

Interns at the ceremony were joined by IPPSR Director Douglas B. Roberts, Ph.D. (first photo, far right)
Former Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema, keynote speaker, remembered his own legislative internship. Legislative internships “are the best graduate school in the world,” he said. “You learn so much so quickly. It’s like trying to drink from a fire hose.”

2007 Awards Mark 30th Anniversary
The 2007 Daniel Rosenthal award went to Nathaniel Knapper of Clarkston, a Calvin College junior with an interest in law and law enforcement. He was nominated by state Rep. Fulton Sheen of Plainwell and former Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema. Knapper served as an intern in Sheen’s and Sikkema’s offices.
Scott Cendrowski of Livonia, a Michigan State University junior majoring
in public policy and public administration pursuing a journalism career,
was named runner-up and winner of an award established by U.S. Rep. Vernon Ehlers of Michigan. Cendrowski was nominated for his work as an intern in the office of Sen.Cameron Brown of Fawn River.
Marilynn Rosenthal of Ann Arbor, Daniel’s mother, was on hand to mark the award’s 30th anniversary. She was among the special guests, including keynote speaker former Rep. Dianne Byrum of Lansing, who praised the award winners and 11 other nominees for their public service.
Fortunately, Knapper and Cendrowski were serving as interns in Washington, D.C. on the day of the award. Thanks to Michigan State University’s Washington, D.C. office, Knapper and Cendrowski, along with Congressman Ehlers were featured in a television link between the two capitals during awards ceremonies.
