A Snapshot of Michigan's Legislative Candidates

This year there are over 400 candidates running in the primaries for one of the 110 seats in the Michigan House of Representatives, and 8 candidates running for the 4th district seat in the upcoming special election for the Michigan Senate which is being held on the same date. With the primaries coming up on August 2nd, we scoured the internet in an attempt to provide some details on the makeup of the candidate base.

Forum on Sustainable Energy in Michigan

Sustainable energy is an increasingly pressing issue as the world’s finite resources deplete, and the environment continues to feel the effects of waste and pollution. In March of 2015 Governor Snyder highlighted a plan for the future of Michigan’s energy production. Included in this plan was a goal for 30-40 percent of Michigan’s energy to come from renewable sources and energy waste reduction within 10 years. Snyder declared that he wanted Michigan to get a head start on its energy future and take preliminary steps ahead of D.C.’s mandate.

Crisis in Flint: How, Why, and Where Do We Go From Here?

Two years ago the city of Flint, Michigan switched its water source from Detroit’s treated water, to that of the local Flint River.  The switch was an attempt to hold down costs until it was able to begin accessing water from Lake Huron via the yet-to-be built KWA pipeline.. The events that followed are now known to the majority of the state, even the country, as national headlines highlighted accelerated levels of lead contamination in Flint.

How Accurate are Michigan Revenue Estimates?

Revenue forecasting is an important component of state budgeting. Without accurate predictions of incoming revenues, states could either allocate more than their available resources or underfund priorities when money is available. The Detroit Public School system has been a hot topic of conversation in recent years, and everyone seems to have a solution. This mix of opinions is largely due to the complexity of the situation at hand; different people managing schools, a competing and prevalent charter school system, loss of population, and questionable actions made by leadership are highlights seen all over the news. In order to achieve solutions however, it’s necessary that leaders come together and discuss the issues Detroit is facing and how to move forward.
