Welcome to the State of the State Survey (SOSS) Michigan
Data on Demand. This is a ongoing resource which allows policymakers,
MSU faculty, and SOSS sponsors to tap into the perceptions of Michigan
adults on a quarterly basis.
The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research
at Michigan State University administers SOSS and this archive through
its Office for Survey Research. We encourage use of the data for
publications and news releases. Please see our frequently
asked questions section or Data
on Demand Overview (.pdf) for more information on SOSS
data including how to properly cite it. Data on Demand is made possible
by software developed by the University
of California, Berkeley. Data on Demand offers:
Online Analysis: Analyze data on Michigan resident perceptions
SPSS Portable Files: Download data for SPSS analysis (.por)

Availability of Data
The State of the State Survey (SOSS) is administered by the Office
of Office for Survey Research (OSR) at Michigan State University's
Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR). IPPSR conducts
SOSS as a public service. Although the investigators on each round
of the survey reserve limited rights with respect to publication
of the results, the data are intended to go into the public domain.
All surveys (and all questions on each survey) are thus intended
to be available publicly.
The following persons are given immediate access to the data from
each round as soon as the field work is completed and the data are
ready for analysis:
The principal investigators (working group) on the given
round, for unrestricted use of the data;
Any instructor at MSU to use SOSS data for instruction (including
distribution to students);
Any office at MSU for institutional research and outreach;
Any enrolled student at MSU for instruction, research, or
outreach (but not for submission for publication until six months
have elapsed).
The principal investigators on each round of SOSS have an exclusive
right to analyze the data for purposes of publication for a period
of six months after the completion of the field period for each
round.
Documentation
In addition to designing and conducting the survey, IPPSR prepares
a Methodological Report for each round. This report contains the
questionnaire, a codebook with frequency distributions, and information
about the field procedures, sample, and members of the working group
for the given round.
Fair Use
IPPSR retains a copyright on SOSS Briefing Papers, Bulletins, Methodological
Reports, and other publications that it directly prepares or sponsors.
SOSS survey data are made available to benefit public education
as well as academic and policy research. Although individuals may
make individual copies of SOSS publications, they are not to make
commercial use or distribution of the data or any of IPPSR's reports,
bulletins, or other printed materials without permission. Researchers
and others who use the data to prepare analyses, reports, and publications
of their own are entitled to copyright their written products but
should acknowledge the source of the data (see How
to Cite SOSS for more information). They cannot limit the access
to or use of the data by others.
Disclaimer
Although IPPSR makes every effort to assure accuracy and high quality
in the data collection and documentation, the data and documentation
are distributed "as is." Neither IPPSR nor Michigan State
University is responsible for any errors in the data or documentation.
Nor is IPPSR or MSU responsible for the interpretation of the data
or documentation by persons who may use it.
A standard disclaimer for use when printing SOSS data is as follows:
