In addition, those who answered the survey were asked their views on the performance of public and higher education institutions in the state, their plans to leave or stay in the state and about the diversity in their friendships.

Theme: SOSS-43 focused on immigration policy, national identity cards, preschool and after-school education programs (familiarity, opinions, and participation), higher education access and perceive quality of programs, attitudes toward affirmative action programs for various groups, sources of helpful information (i.e., newspapers, TV networks and news programs), and health insurance coverage and access to care compared to five years prior. A number of these were particularly incorporated to compare the responses of Hispanic/Latino respondents to those of other Michigan residents. For this purpose, SOSS-43 included a supplemental sample targeting Hispanics/Latinos in Michigan.

Theme: Beyond core questions repeated in each State of the State Survey, SOSS-42 focused on charitable giving and volunteer activities. The questions included items on confidence in charitable organizations, their perceived effectiveness, contributions to or reasons not to contribute to such organizations, the types of organizations to which contributions were made, volunteer efforts and types of organizations attracting volunteers. Another SOSS-42 item asked whether obesity is a matter of social concern or a matter of personal concern. This question has been asked in previous SOSS rounds.

Theme: This Spring survey focused on families’ feelings of economic well-being now and projected a year into the future. It asked households to rate their concerns about inflation, employment and their overall quality of life. They were asked pointed questions about economic development, and its value in the short-term and the long-run, within a community, and also about legislative ethical behavior. Core questions asked respondents to rate the performance of President George Bush and Gov. Jennifer Granholm. The threat of terrorism and civil liberties were also a part of this season’s survey.

Theme: SOSS-40 focused on respondents’ trust in government and elected officials, the preparedness of the state to deal with disasters and the willingness of residents to respond to evacuation orders, the U.S. role in international affairs and an accompanying set focused on concerns related to terrorist attack, perceptions on the economic role of Michigan’s colleges and universities as well as a rating of MSU’s performance in a variety of programmatic activities, views regarding the Safe Delivery of Infants law intended to minimize reckless abandonment of infants, the dramatic increase in the cost of energy, two attitude batteries of questions, one designed to measure respondents’ attitudes toward diversity and change, and the other designed to measure attitudes toward others’ opinions of self, and concerns about and perceived likelihood of traffic accidents.
