2002 Demographics of the Survey Sample

Data used in the analysis are weighted to approximate accurate campus demographics. The individuals responding to the survey are as follows:

Demographic representation of sample• Age: The average respondent age was 21;
• Race/Ethnicity: 74% of the respondents were white and 2% were international students;
• Academic Level: 87% of respondents were undergraduates;
• Gender: 31% were male and 69% were female;
• Residence: 51% of the respondents were living on campus; and,
• Fraternity/Sorority Membership: 7% belonged to a greek organization on campus.

2002 Data and Data Analysis Information

Michigan State University (MSU) participated in the National College Health Assessment Survey through Olin Student Health Center’s membership in the American College Health Association (ACHA). Unless otherwise specified, all data presented are from the 2002 NCHA Health Survey. The study was conducted by MSU's Office for Survey Research (OSR) within the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research. The analysis of the survey results was conducted by OSR Senior Survey Methodologist Larry A. Hembroff, Ph.D.; Corey Ray, Graduate Research Assistant; and Patric Spence, Graduate Research Assistant. 2002 Survey Results

Provided below are highlights of the survey results. For more detailed results please click on the subject area in green.

Alcohol and Other Drug Use
• Least amount of consequences were reported by females, upperclassmen, 3.0 GPA or higher, and off-campus.
• 62% of students report drinking 0-5 drinks the last time they partied.
• Average drinking span was 3.2 hours.

Weight, Nutrition, and Exercise
• 38% report doing exercise to strengthen/tone muscles 3 times a week or more.
• 73% were at an ‘acceptable’ weight based on BMI score.

Sexual Behavior, Perceptions, and Contraception
• 47% of sexually active students report ‘always/mostly’ using condoms.
• 75% of students report being sexually active.

Mental and Emotional Health
• 12% of students report feelings ‘things were hopeless’ 9 or more times.
• 8% of students report feeling ‘so depressed that it was difficult to function’ 9 or more times.

Impediments to Academic Performance
• 25% report injuring themselves.
• 87.9% report having cold/flu.
• 61.4% report having sleep difficulties.
• 87.6% report experiencing stress.

Perceptions of Overall Health
• 64.5% of the respondents rated their health as excellent or very good.
