Lansing - State lawmakers this week face the task of deciding for the second time in 13 months who will face cuts in state spending. They voted last week to cut $337 million. Gov. Engler recommended cuts for state departments.

Friday, December 6
Lansing - An estimated 72% of Michigan residents support charter schools, according to a Michigan State University survey. Republicans in the state House of Representatives failed last week to win passage of a bill that would increase the number of charter schools in Michigan. But GOP leaders may try again before the end of the year. Michigan now has 188 charter schools.

Thursday, December 5
Rockford - Lyle Squires, 91, drowned when his all-terrain vehicle plunged through thin ice on a pond behind his home, authorities said. Squires was a farmer, landscaper, auctioneer, trucker and livestock dealer. He died while putting out buckets of apples for deer.

Wednesday, December 4
Lansing - Five national retail chains had a relatively low error rate in this year's survey of price scanners, Attorney General Jennifer Granholm said. Sticker prices were compared to prices rung up on checkout scanners at 12 stores in Ingham, Eaton, Kent and Wayne counties. The stores surveyed were J.C. Penney, Marshall Field's, Target, Mervyn's and Sears.

Tuesday, December 3
Detroit - State lawmakers resume the task of resolving a $400 million state budget deficit this week after their two-week Thanksgiving recess. Any bills not passed by Dec. 31 will have to be re-introduced and begin the legislative process again. Incoming Gov. Jennifer Granholm faces a budget shortage of about $1.8 billion for 2003-2004.
