Graduation Ceremony Planned for Political Leadership Fellows

Media Contacts: Amy J. Baumer
Release Date: February 14, 2003

EAST LANSING, Mich.–On Thursday, February 20, 2003, current and future leaders will graduate from Michigan State University’s Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP). These individuals have participated in a year long, hands-on program in personal leadership development, public policy analysis and process, effective governance, and campaigning.

Twenty-four fully paid fellowships are awarded annually on a competitive basis by MPLP. Together with their predecessors, the 2002 graduates represent an alumni corps of over 300 individuals, comprised of a diverse group of men and women from across the state.

“I am encouraged by effort put forth by class members during this year’s program,” said Co-director James G. Agee. “The leadership skills of the 2002 class along with those of our alumni are building a positive foundation for the future of our state.”

“The 2002 Michigan Political Leadership Program graduates have clearly demonstrated that they are indeed ready to tackle public policy issues as candidates for office, as government officials, and as involved citizens,” said Co-director Anne M. Mervenne.

Graduates will be honored at the MPLP Annual Fundraising Dinner on February 20, 2003 at the Laurel Manor in Livonia. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception. Dinner and a program follow at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the dinner, MPLP will also host its Inaugural West Michigan Breakfast on Friday, February 21, 2003 at the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and the program at 8:30 a.m.

Both the dinner and breakfast will feature a discussion between Dee Dee Myers, White House press secretary during the Clinton administration and consultant to the NBC television series The West Wing; and Karen Hughes, who contributed to President George W. Bush’s recent State of the Union address, and has served as advisor to the President and director of the Texas Republican Party. Carmen Harlan, Senior News Anchor with WDIV-TV, Detroit, will moderate the dinner discussion; and Eduardo B. (Ed) Fernandez, Vice President and General Manager of WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, will moderate the breakfast. Tickets for each event are $125, $100 of which is tax deductible. Dollars raised at the events will make future fellowships—valued at $12,000 each—possible.
