EAST LANSING, Mich.—Michigan State University’s (MSU)
Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) and Urban
Affairs Programs (UAP) announce the release of “Urban
Policy Choices for Michigan Leaders.” Published by the
MSU Press, the book is a collaborative effort aimed at providing
policymakers with a clear understanding of the key factors that
constitute urban policy debates.
The book combines the expertise of over seventeen faculty from across
campus and covers central problems and possible solutions for issues
of economic development, housing, and social justice, as well as
the analysis of Michigan’s general revenue sharing formula
and the current and projected use of land. Contributors also highlight
racial and community issues related to Hispanics, African Americans,
and new immigrants.
The book was released in tandem with a forum the two groups hosted
today at 11:30-1:30 p.m. at the Library of Michigan called “Diversity
and the Future of Michigan’s Cities.” Over 60 policymakers
and those involved in the policy process took part in the event.
“The recently published book, Urban Policy Choices for Michigan
Leaders, comes at an important turning point in determining the
future of Michigan cities. State and local leaders will appreciate
brief chapters providing research based information on barriers
and bolsters to urban economic development,” said Paul Hillegonds,
President, Detroit Renaissance.
“This book provides a directory of resources and people that
can inform important decisions to be made for the future of Michigan
and other states.”
The book was edited and organized by Dozier W. Thornton, Acting
Dean of MSU’s Urban Affairs Programs and Professor of Psychology;
and, Carol S. Weissert, Professor of Political Science and Director
of the MSU Institute for Public Policy and Social Research.
“The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and
Urban Affairs Programs at MSU provide a primer for community leaders
who seek understanding of the more crippling problems facing cities
clear across the nation,” said State Representative Michael
C. Murphy, Lansing and District 68.
“Issue summaries as well as policy options for tackling these
problems are clearly presented. This is a ‘quick read’
that will appeal to those who are ready to make positive policy
changes in urban and metropolitan areas intended to enhance the
entire state population.”
Books can be purchased for $24.95 online at the MSU
Press. The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research is
the nonpartisan public policy network at Michigan State University.
IPPSR is dedicated to connecting legislators, scholars, and practitioners
through applied research, lively policy forums, and political leadership
instruction.
