EAST LANSING, Mich.—Michigan State University's Michigan
Political Leadership Program (MPLP) announces today the selection
of twenty-four individuals from across Michigan as recipients
of its 2003 political leadership fellowships. Some 100 candidates
competed for a slot in the Institute for Public Policy and Social
Research program that runs February through November.
"This year's group of fellows not only met but exceeded our
expectations. Our excitement is fueled by the knowledge that each
of these individuals will be ready to give back the highest level
of leadership to their communities upon completion of our ten-month
program," said MPLP Co-director James G. Agee. Mr. Agee, former
Democratic State Legislator also serves as President of J.G. Agee
Consultants, Inc.
An equal mix of Republicans and Democrats as well as two Independents
will take part in MPLP's rigorous curriculum on practical politics,
public policy analysis and process, personal leadership development,
and effective governance. Fellows are awarded this $12,000 fellowship
that hones public policy decision-making, leadership, and campaign
management skills.
Two fundraising events-featuring national-level speakers—Ms.
Karen Hughes and Ms. Dee Dee Myers—are
set for February 20 and 21. The events are expected to draw hundreds
of top leaders and raise much of the financial support needed for
the fellowships:
· MPLP Annual
Fundraising Dinner, Thursday, February 20, 5:30-9:00p.m.,
at the Laurel Manor in Livonia.
· MPLP Inaugural
West Michigan Breakfast, Friday, February 21, 7:30-9:30a.m.,
at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids.
The events will provide an insider's look into the White House
and the national political scene. Ms. Hughes is former Counselor
to President George W. Bush and current advisor on communication
strategies. Ms. Myers is a former White House Press Secretary to
President William Jefferson Clinton, and is currently Contributing
Editor to Vanity Fair magazine, and consultant to NBC television
drama The West Wing.
Tickets at $125 ($100 of which is tax deductible) and sponsorships
at all levels are available by contacting MPLP at (517) 355-6672
or by visiting MPLP online.
The Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) is distinguished
as one of only a handful of programs of its kind in the nation.
The innovative program is directed by Mr. James G. Agee and Ms.
Anne M. Mervenne. MPLP is a program of the Institute for Public
Policy and Social Research in MSU's College of Social Science.
